New Google Chrome features will help save battery

Google will roll out two performance settings for Chrome over the next weeks in order to conserve memory and battery life. With the release of Chrome 108, the update will be accessible to desktop users of Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS.

New Google Chrome features

Here are some upcoming changes and instructions for downloading them.

1- Energy Saver mode

On a laptop, Chrome will enter Energy Saver mode to extend battery life when the battery level hits 20%. For websites with complex visuals, such as animations and movies, it will achieve this by reducing background activities and visual effects.

When the update is active, a leaf-shaped symbol will appear in the top right corner of your browser, allowing you to switch on Energy Saver mode. Energy Saver mode will automatically turn on when your battery life reaches that 20% mark.

2- Memory Saver mode

Google is also making Memory Saver mode available. This is for those who frequently have multiple tabs open. The tabs you're really using get priority when Memory Saver mode is on. The tabs you aren't using right now will be cleared from Chrome's memory, but they will reload when you need them.

The new feature, according to Google, would allow Chrome to use up to 30% less RAM, resulting in a smoother or quicker surfing experience. When Memory Saver is active, Chrome's top right corner will display an icon that shows how much space it has saved.

How to update your Chrome browser

Over the upcoming few weeks, the new upgrade will become accessible everywhere. These procedures will ensure that you are using the most recent version of Chrome.

  • Open Chrome on your desktop.
  • On the top right, click the three-dot icon.
  • Go to Help
  • About Google Chrome.
  • Click Update Google Chrome.

If you can’t find this button, it means you’re already on the latest version.
Once you’ve updated, relaunch the Chrome browser.
In Settings, you should see a new Performance sidebar menu with these two new features.
